The girls’ water polo team has been known as one of the top teams in school. Coach Harvey explains how such a legacy is maintained. “We have a pretty good system. The players seem to be well motivated to continue the legacy…they make sure to have fun and want to win as well as having discipline and working hard. When you do all that, success generally follows,” he says.
Keeping the dominant attitude, he goes over the plan for this weekend’s tournament. “I expect to have some fight in us, to battle for every loose ball and make the other team regret they came into our territory,” he says.

To honor the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Mr. Perry, one of the WHS U.S History teachers, wants students to understand how the attacks changed American society while also recognizing the consequences that follow. “It was a surge of patriotism in the United States, which also had downsides, because there were also waves of Islamophobia that kind of came with it,” he said.

This week at Washington High School, counselors are visiting the 12th-grade English classes to review graduation requirements and college application deadlines. Washington High School counselor Ms. Andrea Berino said, “We suggest that all students, even if they have plans for after high school, submit a registration through Ohlone as a backup plan.”
Counselors are also holding a private university workshop this week for students who need counselor letters of recommendation. “Students who are planning on applying to private universities should attend the workshop if they need a letter of recommendation from their counselor,” Berino said.

As the school year progresses, more events are approaching. Senior Beverly-Ann Harper gives her take on prices. “Dang, they are high prices. It’s like inflation. But it’s totally worth it. Make all the memories you can.”

Audrielle Deguzman, a senior and Art 1 student, explains a recent art project that she completed in class, and her inspiration.
“Our first element of art was lines, and the first thing I thought of was spiderwebs. So I thought of Spider-Man. And then I eventually started connecting the dots that it could work for everything else… I thought of value, so I thought of Spider-Noir because of his black-and-white visuals.”

WHS Dance Co is currently preparing to perform at a fair in Niles while practicing and going over their routines to make sure they are ready. Dance captain Nyla Naveen, a senior, said the team is also looking forward to upcoming auditions on October 1 and October 5. She explains that “the general team is open to anyone, any time and the performance team gives you a lot of opportunities to go around and showcase your skills.”

The Washington High Band continues to put in hard work and discipline to prepare for upcoming events. When asked what the best part about being in band is, Junior Yasasvi Damerla says, “The community. I know band kids get a bad rep as being the ‘weird kids,’ but inside the band everyone helps each other and takes care of each other, truly like a family.”

Sneha Saigal, a junior and the president of the Robotics Club, hopes to meet new people that share her interests in engineering and robotics while simultaneously furthering her understanding of the field. She says, “I’m really excited to help teach people who want to learn more about robotics!”
Nishka Ammatanda, a current junior and treasurer of the club, echoes this, expressing her excitement to work together with her fellow officers to have a productive year. She adds, “I joined the Robotics Club because I have always had an interest in STEM and engineering. This club is my gateway to progressing my engineering and coding skills!”
