Flocking to flavor: Hot chicken craze takes over off-campus lunch

With the start of the new school year, Washington High School students’ eyes have been drawn to the grand opening of a new restaurant called “Angry Chickz.” The restaurant officially had its grand opening on Friday, August 15th, attracting many students, with some even skipping their 4th periods just to make it in the line. The concept is simple, and pretty similar to restaurants like Canes, or Dave’s Hot Chicken. So what makes Angry Chickz so popular, especially amongst Washington High School students?

Many students carpool to make their way to Angry Chickz, Washington High School senior Jack Lamont explains. “I like the environment of Angry Chickz a lot. I think their food is really good and I really enjoy the convenience of it.” He added, “The food comes pretty quick. You can order online too.”

According to Lamont, the price is good too: “Per day at lunch if I were to go out, it’d be pretty similar to other restaurants. Maybe like 15-17 dollars. But I feel like I can get at least a little more than a meal out of a full Angry Chickz bowl.”

However, he admits that part of the excitement comes from the newness of it. “I think it’s not something we’re used to having so close to us, but I think it’s nice to have it here now,” Lamont says. Since opening, he also shared that he has already been there “maybe 8 to 9 times.”

Other students are even more dedicated fans. Washington High school senior Gleb Tryndin said, “Since Angry Chickz opened, I’ve been there 26 times, so that’s 1.7 times a day.” When asked how it compares to school lunch, he said, “Oh, it’s way better. Cafeteria food is buns.” Tryndin says his go-to order is, “The Angry Mac. It’s like mac and cheese and chicken and fries at the bottom.”

Both of these Washington High school students agree that while the cafeteria’s free meals are convenient, Angry Chickz feels like more of a treat. As Jack Lamont puts it, “If I have the money to go, I’d much rather go there. I think the food is better, you get more food for your lunch, and I think it’s just nicer to have that. But I think Angry Chickz is a nice treat to have once in a while.”

With the convenience of its location, generous portion sizes and powerful flavors of spice, it’s no surprise that people are flocking to Angry Chickz. While the new spot will not fully replace all of the other lunch options, it will definitely stay as a major hot spot for years to come.
