Can LeBron James still maintain his greatness after 21 seasons

LeBron James has consistently redefined greatness over his 21-year NBA career. From becoming the league’s all-time leading scorer to winning four championships, LeBron’s achievements place him among basketball’s all-time greats. As he enters his 22nd season at 39 years old, fans are asking if “The King” can continue to perform at an elite level, lead the Lakers to another title, and navigate a unique chapter in his career: sharing the NBA spotlight with his son, Bronny James.

LeBron’s resume is unmatched. Since his 2003 debut, he’s averaged 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game in 1,500+ regular-season matchups. He’s been selected for 20 All-Star games, earned four MVP awards, and been named to the All-NBA First Team 13 times. On the defensive side, he’s been a five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team member. In 2023, LeBron broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s nearly 40-year record for the most career points in NBA history. In 2024, he surpassed the 40,000-point mark, cementing his legacy as a statistical juggernaut. To me, these accomplishments prove that LeBron is far from finished. Even at 39, he continues to play at an elite level, demonstrating his ability to contribute significantly to his team. Age may be a factor, but LeBron’s work ethic, experience, and basketball IQ suggest he still has plenty to offer. I believe he will continue to push boundaries and remain a dominant force in the league for seasons to come.

Many people consider LeBron as the greatest player in NBA history not just for his longevity, but for his ability to evolve and excel in a league that grows more competitive every year. NBA TV analyst Greg Anthony put it best: “It doesn’t take away from Michael Jordan or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but the level of talent in today’s league is unmatched. For LeBron to dominate in this era speaks volumes.”

But even the greatest face challenges. At nearly 40 years old, LeBron’s role has shifted. While still a critical piece of the Lakers, he’s no longer their sole star. Anthony Davis has taken on the mantle of the team’s leader, with LeBron playing a supportive role. This transition, combined with his physical upkeep (LeBron reportedly invests millions annually into his body) has allowed him to extend his career and remain effective.

LeBron’s longevity is even more impressive when compared to other greats at similar ages. Players like Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan had noticeably declined in their late 30s, yet LeBron continues to deliver. Siddarth Geethakrishnan, a senior at Washington High School, remarked, “LeBron’s discipline and investment in his body give me confidence that he can keep playing at a high level.” Still, questions remain about the Lakers’ championship potential. The current roster lacks the depth and role players that supported LeBron and Davis during their 2020 title run. Without improvements, the Lakers may struggle to contend for another championship.

Meanwhile, LeBron’s journey with his son Bronny is just beginning. Bronny, a rookie, is currently adjusting to the professional game. After limited playing time at USC, he has been sent to the Lakers’ G-League affiliate to develop his skills. While some may see this as a setback, it’s an opportunity for Bronny to grow.

LeBron’s legacy isn’t just about his on-court dominance. Off the court, he’s a mentor, entrepreneur, and activist, leaving a profound impact on the communities he serves. From founding the I PROMISE School to advocating for social justice, his influence extends far beyond basketball.

As LeBron enters what could be his final seasons, his focus seems clear: to play long enough to share the court with his youngest son, Bronny James. Whether or not LeBron wins another championship, his career will be remembered as one of the greatest in sports history. His ability to perform at an elite level for two decades is unparalleled, and his continued dedication to making history is why fans still call him “King James.”

The 2024-25 season offers a unique story, a legend chasing greatness while passing the torch to the next generation. As the NBA season unfolds, one thing is certain: LeBron James isn’t done rewriting the record books.

Eric Ma, a senior at Washington High School, has spent his entire life in the Bay Area. This is his first year working for The Hatchet, and he aspires to capture campus life through photography. He is the WHS Aviation Club's founder and president, as well as a member of the Photography Club. Eric is a student pilot and photographer with over 1500 Instagram followers. He intends to attend a flight program at a university to become a commercial pilot or to join the US Air Force to become a fighter pilot.
