After a disappointing 2024 season, the Washington Huskies are working towards a better 2025. The team hopes to improve their 3-7 record from last year and make a playoff run. Last year, the team had problems with people not showing up to practice and people not giving enough effort, causing them to underperform. They hope to overcome these challenges this year. Currently, they are 3-1.
Varsity Captain Michael Moreno said, “Last year we didn’t have any motivation ever since our couple of losses in the first couple of games. But this year, I feel like we as a team, all have the motivation to have a great year.”
The Huskies are ambitious this year. “Our goal is to make the playoffs, win, and hopefully go beyond the first round,” Moreno explained. The other Varsity captain, Joseph Guerra, said, “As a team, we’re aiming for at least an eight-one record. The Huskies want to go above and beyond this year and try to win a championship. My personal goal is to give it my all and get a Division One offer.” Joseph Guerra is a versatile player who plays many positions including wide receiver, and safety. He’s one of the main scorers for the Huskies offense.
Several players are stepping up as leaders. Moreno reflects on Guerra’s performance in the Washington Huskies’ win against Weston Ranch on August 29, a 49-13 blowout: “He scored four touchdowns in the first half of the game and didn’t even play the second half.” In another game against James Lick, senior wide receiver and cornerback, Chad Corpuz, had 1 touchdown and 1 interception in the 62-0 win. It’s clear that the team doesn’t lack talent.
Mason Schneider, another one of the team’s captains, emphasized teamwork. “We’re making sure everyone shows up, participates and practices, so we’re ready for the games,” he said.
The Huskies have implemented several strategies to make sure they perform better this year. Guerra said, “It’s all about the grind and consistency.” Schneider added, “We’ve just mainly tried to stay consistent and keep working hard, not taking any days off.” The Huskies have tried to limit absences from practice which they have had problems with in the past.
In their Homecoming Game which was also Battle of the Boulevard against American High School, they won 46-20. Joseph Guerra had an outstanding performance totalling 227 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception while Michael Moreno had 1 touchdown and 59 yards in the win against American.
With better leadership, goals, and school pride, the football team is determined to turn last year’s struggles into success this season.
