Isabelle Lullo is one of the many artists from Washington High School whose passion for the arts is a big part of who she is. She’s a visual artist who, along with painting and sketching, also enjoys photography.“I’m not really sure what got me into art,” Lullo says. “I’ve kinda just been doing it my whole life.”
Besides photography and art, Lullo also enjoys sports; she was on the lacrosse team last year, before the Covid-19 global pandemic happened, and plans on joining when the season starts up again. Like lacrosse, Lullo says that she enjoys art because “it helps me calm down and get my mind off [stressful] things.” While playing lacrosse Lullo didn’t quite focus on her art as much as she would have liked, and even though lacrosse is something she truly enjoys, art is her main passion which she wants to make a career of.
Lullo’s art style varies depending on her moods and feelings of creativity. Some artwork she brings into existence with just the strokes of a simple pencil; others can include anything from painting to drawing on old CD’s. However, Lullo’s favorite way to convey her emotions is through art with acrylic paint, a brush, and a canvas, usually a medium to small size one with cotton-made material.
The picture above features a small collage of a few of Lullo’s pieces. One CD depicts a setting deep in the Milky Way galaxy, and the other represents the sky in the hit children’s TV Show, “Spongebob Squarepants.” One of her favorite pieces is a drawing of “Bughead,” which is the “ship name” (a fictional pairing or couple that you want to get into a relationship) of two characters from the CW TV-show “Riverdale”: Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper. Another drawing is of her favorite band, Why Don’t We, of which she has been a loyal supporter for some years now. The drawing features Corbyn Besson, Jack Avery, Daniel Seavey, Zach Herron, and Jonah Marais.

There are many ways people can become artists, but often it’s easier to give up on trying. For people that plan to start their journey as artists, Lullo has some great advice to share: “Don’t give up, just keep practicing,” she says. “It takes time to be really good at something.”
After high school, Isabelle plans to pursue photography as a possible future career. She is an outstanding and unique artist who loves to create new forms of art. The Hatchet certainly looks forward to seeing more of her work in the future and how her style will evolve.
Olivia Gunnt is currently a sophomore. She was born in Stockholm, Sweden and was partially raised there, but moved to Callifornia in 2015. This is her first year at the paper, and she's interested in writing about the LGBTQ+ community, politics, and opinions. She enjoys drawing, writing, reading, and listening to all kinds of music. Ever since Olivia was five, she’s had the dream of creating and owning her own streetwear fashion company, since she's always loved fashion and has always been very independent.
